Apple has reportedly delayed the launch of its long-rumoured smart home display as development of some importan AI features continues to fall behind schedule. If we go by the report from Mark Gurman, Apple has pushed back the launch timeline again as the upgraded Siri experience is not yet ready.
The device, which has been in development for several years now, was expected to be Apple’s key product into the smart home segment. However, the delay indicates that the cupertino giant is still working to complete big upgrades to its voice assistant, Siri, which will power many of the device’s AI features.
Launch Timeline Shifted Multiple Times
The smart home display was originally expected to launch in spring 2025. Apple later aimed to release it this month, assuming the next-gen Siri features would be ready in time.
However, the development of those AI features has reportedly taken longer than expected. Apple is now said to be targeting a launch around September, when the upgraded Siri platform may finally be complete.
Siri AI Upgrade Still in Development
The primary reason behind the delay appears to be the ongoing work on Apple’s next-gen Siri assistant. Apple had initially planned to deliver the upgraded AI features through iOS 26 version 26.4. However, those plans have reportedly shifted.
The company is now believed to be targeting either iOS 26.5 or iOS 27 to introduce the upgraded Siri platform.
The new assistant is expected to process user data more intelligently, allowing it to provide more contextual responses and personalized information. Apple is also said to be redesigning Siri’s interface and capabilities so it behaves more like a modern AI chatbot.
Design and Hardware Details
Reports indicates that the device can resemble to a compact tablet mounted on a speaker base. It has been described as looking like a square iPad attached to a half-dome speaker, with an option to mount it on a wall. Apart from that it is expected to includea 7-inch display, aluminium body, USB-C charging port and a built-in speaker system in the base.
The interface is also expected to differ from typical iPad layouts. Instead of standard grid icons, the home screen can use circular app icons similar to those seen on the Apple Watch.
More Smart Home and AI Devices in Development
However, the smart home display is not the only device. The company is said to be working on a broader smart home lineup, and the smart display is just the first one on the list. According to Gurman, Apple is also developing a larger version with a robotic arm and a 9-inch display, which could arrive next year.
Apart from that, Apple is said to be exploring some other AI-powered products, including smart glasses, camera equipped AirPods, and a wearable pendant type AI device.
